Designing Urban Tranquility in Copenhagen

In the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark, on historic Amaliegade, a hidden courtyard has been transformed into a serene retreat for office workers and visitors alike. Surrounded by lush greenery and infused with natural light, this thoughtfully designed outdoor space offers a rare balance of urban tranquility and modern functionality.

The project was a collaboration between Ines Bukhardt, internal architect at Jeudan, and Daniel Braat, landscape architect at COBE. Their vision was clear: to design a courtyard that reflects Copenhagen’s heritage while embracing contemporary design principles. The result is a multifunctional oasis that encourages relaxation, informal meetings, and community connection, a much-needed pause from the city’s fast pace.

Honoring Copenhagen’s Design Heritage

The design team set out to merge the classic materials of Copenhagen with a clean, modern aesthetic. Soft white brick tiles form curved seating and winding bed edges, contrasting with traditional cobblestones laid in circular patterns. The mix of old and new reflects the city’s layered history while offering a fresh perspective.

Plant beds were integrated throughout the courtyard to enrich the sensory experience. As these plants mature, the space will evolve season by season, deepening its connection to nature and enhancing the biophilic design that is central to modern architecture.

A Space for Rest, Reflection, and Connection

The courtyard had to serve multiple purposes: a place for quiet reflection, informal collaboration, and even practical functions like bike shelters and parking. By dividing the space into two zones—one dedicated to functionality and the other to leisure—the architects created a design that balances utility with beauty.

“The design provides spaces for both solitude and interaction, making it a dynamic environment where people can gather, reflect, or simply enjoy the outdoors,” Bukhardt explains.

Muuto’s Linear Steel Series in Copenhagen

At the heart of the courtyard’s design is Muuto’s Linear Steel Series, a collection that seamlessly integrates into the space. Available in light gray and green, the furniture reflects the hard architectural surfaces while blending harmoniously with the surrounding greenery.

Durability was a priority. “We wanted pieces that could handle outdoor conditions all year long, with minimal upkeep,” says Bukhardt. Muuto’s Linear Steel furniture not only withstands Copenhagen’s climate but also offers flexibility, sturdy enough to stay in place, yet easy to rearrange for gatherings and events.

Whether for a quiet lunch break, a casual meeting, or a lively social event, the furniture adapts to its surroundings, reinforcing Muuto’s philosophy of design that serves both form and function.

An Evolving Courtyard

One of the most compelling aspects of the project is its adaptability. As seasons shift and plant life matures, the courtyard continues to evolve. Already a popular spot for workers in the surrounding offices, its proximity to the office canteen makes it even more practical.

“We want this to be a living, breathing space, Bukhardt explains. “As the plants mature and the space continues to adapt, the flexibility of Muuto’s furniture ensures it can serve both personal moments of reflection and social gatherings.”

This Muuto project in Copenhagen showcases how thoughtful design can transform overlooked urban spaces into vibrant, sustainable havens. By blending modern Scandinavian furniture design with timeless architectural materials, the courtyard creates a sense of balance, an urban sanctuary where people can pause, reflect, and reconnect.
