Cabinet, shelf and millwork lighting places the source exactly where it is useful: beneath an upper cabinet, within a display shelf, along a toe kick or inside a closet. When properly detailed, the lighting feels like part of the furniture rather than an accessory added afterward.

Common millwork applications

Under-cabinet lighting illuminates counters and work surfaces. Integrated shelf lighting highlights objects and reduces shadows between levels. Toe-kick lighting can provide low-level orientation at night. Interior cabinet and closet lighting improves visibility, while bar, vanity and niche lighting adds atmosphere and depth.

Each application has different needs for output, shielding, switching and environmental rating.

LED strip, extrusion or miniature spotlight?

LED strip within an aluminum extrusion is ideal for continuous illumination. The extrusion manages heat, protects the source and supports a lens that helps blend the LEDs. A rigid linear fixture may simplify specification for longer or higher-output runs. Miniature spotlights are better when individual objects need focused emphasis.

Avoid installing bare LED tape where it is visible or difficult to service. Even a small profile can make the result look more finished and perform more reliably.

Avoiding reflections and visible dots

Glossy counters, glass shelves and polished stone can reflect the source even when it is hidden from direct view. Move the fixture, change its angle or select a deeper and more diffused profile to reduce reflected dots. A sample installed with the actual material is often revealing.

For under-cabinet task lighting, placing the source toward the front of the cabinet typically distributes light more evenly across the counter than placing it against the back wall.

Controls & access

Door switches, occupancy sensors, dimmers and scene controls can make integrated lighting easier to use. Drivers should remain accessible without dismantling finished millwork. Coordinate wiring paths, ventilation and removable panels with the cabinetmaker before fabrication.
