Cove and Indirect Lighting
Concealed light reflected from ceilings and walls for a softer, more spacious atmosphere.
Cove and indirect lighting conceal the source and use a nearby ceiling or wall to reflect light into the room. The effect can be calm and atmospheric, but it can also contribute meaningful ambient illumination when the cove geometry, output and surface reflectance are properly planned.
What is cove lighting?
A cove is an architectural ledge, pocket or recess that hides the lighting system from normal view. The fixture may aim upward toward the ceiling, outward across a wall or at an angle between the two. Because viewers see reflected light rather than the bare source, the result is usually softer than direct illumination.
Indirect light can make ceilings feel higher, clarify room edges and reduce the visual clutter of numerous downlights.
Different cove effects
A forward-throw cove pushes light farther across the ceiling. A wall-mounted indirect fixture can create a similar effect without a built cove. A grazing cove sits close to the surface and emphasizes texture or a sculptural ceiling detail. Curtain lighting uses a concealed linear source to illuminate drapery or the wall behind it.
The shape and dimensions of the cove determine which optic and fixture orientation will work best.

How to avoid dots and hot spots
Individual LED images may appear on a nearby surface when the fixture is too close, the LED spacing is too wide or the lens does not provide enough diffusion. Increasing the setback, selecting a more diffused optic or using a higher-density source can improve the blend.
A bright streak near the cove followed by a dark ceiling usually indicates that the light is not reaching far enough. Optics and aiming are often more effective solutions than simply increasing wattage.
Plan the surface, too
Indirect lighting reveals the ceiling or wall it illuminates. Uneven paint, framing waves and unfinished areas hidden from normal view can become visible. Specify a consistent matte finish and coordinate the cove detail with the lighting before construction.
