Outdoor and Wet-Location Linear Lighting
Architectural lines of light engineered for moisture, weather and demanding exterior conditions.
Outdoor linear lighting can reveal a façade, trace a landscape edge, illuminate steps or create a continuous line within exterior architecture. The visual idea may resemble an interior detail, but the product must withstand moisture, temperature changes, ultraviolet exposure and the realities of installation outdoors.
Wet-rated versus damp-rated
Damp-rated fixtures are intended for moisture and condensation without direct exposure to water. Wet-rated fixtures are designed for conditions where rain, spray or other direct water contact can occur. IP ratings provide additional information about protection from solids and water, but they should be interpreted alongside the fixture listing and the actual application.
A high IP number does not compensate for improper connections, drainage or installation.
Understanding IP ratings
IP65 generally indicates protection against dust and low-pressure water jets. IP67 adds protection during temporary immersion under defined conditions. IP68 addresses continuous immersion under manufacturer-stated parameters. The appropriate level depends on whether the fixture is under an overhang, exposed to weather, near irrigation or installed where water may accumulate.
Pools, fountains and submersible conditions require products specifically listed and detailed for those environments.
Outdoor applications
Linear systems can graze stone and masonry façades, wash landscape walls, illuminate handrails and steps, trace rooflines or create direct-view accents. Flexible products are useful around curves, while rigid grazers offer controlled performance across straight surfaces.
Consider daytime appearance as well as nighttime effect. Mounting clips, channels, wiring and sealant may be clearly visible when the light is off.
Luminii wet-location options
Luminii offers wet-location LED strip, Kendo linear configurations and flexible Kurba systems for a range of architectural conditions. Kurba products can provide direct-view or curved lines, while Kurba 3D Grazer adds a grazing distribution for shaped surfaces. Luminii’s broader portfolio also includes wet-rated downlights and surface-mounted fixtures.
Product suitability should be verified for temperature range, exposure, mounting orientation, bend radius and required IP protection.
Details that protect the installation
Plan drainage so water cannot sit against the fixture or connections. Use manufacturer-approved feeds, end caps and sealing procedures. Locate power supplies where they remain accessible and within their environmental ratings. Coordinate expansion, corrosion, substrate movement and maintenance access.
Exterior lighting should be commissioned after dark so aiming, output and control scenes can be adjusted in the real environment.
