Wall washing distributes light broadly and evenly across a vertical surface. Instead of highlighting every texture, it reduces strong contrast and helps the wall read as a luminous plane. A well-washed wall can make a room feel brighter and more spacious while drawing attention to artwork, finishes or architecture.
How wall washing differs from grazing
A wall washer is positioned far enough from the surface—and uses optics broad enough—to blend the light vertically and horizontally. A wall grazer sits much closer and produces sharper highlights and shadows. Washing is generally preferred for smooth walls, galleries and spaces where visual uniformity matters.
Some products are described as graze-wash fixtures because they can produce effects along the spectrum depending on placement and optics. The layout still determines the final result.
Linear versus point-source wall washing
A continuous linear wall washer can produce an uninterrupted field of light and is useful for long feature walls or concealed architectural details. Recessed downlight wall washers use individual apertures spaced along the ceiling. They can preserve a clean ceiling while creating overlapping distributions on the wall.
Miniature linear micro-optics offer another approach: a row of small controlled sources can provide precision with a very narrow visual footprint.

Artwork and material considerations
For artwork, color quality and UV or conservation requirements may be as important as brightness. Highly reflective finishes can reveal source images, while dark walls require more light to achieve the same perceived brightness as pale surfaces.
If art locations may change, adjustable or track-based sources can provide more flexibility than a fixed wall-wash layout.
Avoiding common problems
Uneven spacing can create bright peaks and dark gaps. Fixtures placed too close to the wall may produce scallops or excessive brightness near the ceiling. Poor shielding can make the aperture glare when viewed from across the room. Photometric calculations and a mockup can help resolve these issues before installation.
